Donald MacKay fonds. 1895-1983, predominant 1943-1983.

The fonds consists of records from International House (1955-1963) and the Board of Trustees of the International House Association (1953-1963) as well as assorted printed material generated by International House. The Collection also includes a scrapbook of early advertising memorabilia (1895-1900), a history of UBC's Department of Psychology, collected material pertaining to the Axis powers during World War II and an unidentified diary.

Donald MacKay was born in Barrie, Ontario and completed a B.A. (1929) and M.A. (1930) at Queen's University, and his Ph.D. at Stanford University (1934). MacKay then taught marine studies in zoology at the University of Connecticut, Stanford University, and the University of Hawaii. He then served as assistant director of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission (1943-1946). A course in psychology was first offered by the University in 1915, through the Department of Philosophy. Prof. James Henderson was the sole member of the Department until 1920, when Dr. H.T.J. Coleman was appointed Head (as well as Dean of Arts). Only one course in psychology was taught until 1926, but by 1936 enough courses had been added to the curriculum for the Department's name to be changed to Philosophy and Psychology.
